Why Ankle Supports Help To Speed Up Recovery

Ankle supports do not repair or heal your actual injury or condition whether it be arthritis or carpel tunnel syndrome. This is because that would be impossible. Instead, it strengthens your ankle internally. Here is why and how.

So What Makes The Ankle Support So Effective?

It's Neoprene

Is Neoprene Waterproof?

Neoprene foam can be produced in either closed-cell or open-cell form. The closed-cell form is waterproof because it contains gas (nitrogen) cells.

By manufacturing neoprene with nitrogen gas, the material becomes more insulated and makes the material very buoyant.

Neoprene is a stretchy material. When neoprene is used to make wetsuits they can stretch five to six times its original length.

This is exactly the reason we designed our ankle braces with this material, as it can fit up to almost any size. If that wasn't enough, there are also adjustable straps. Meaning it can fit every single size.

Neoprene has many advantages such as waterproof and thermal insulation, but it is not breathable as it is constructed with closed-cell structure.

While retaining many of the great features of neoprene, our punctured neoprene creates channels. Which allows body heat and sweat go through as water vapour.

This creates a sort of cooling effect making the punctured neoprene super breathable.

And if all that doesn't sound good enough the neoprene material is also
non-irritable meaning it will not trigger and rashes and is a non-itchy material.

It Has Two Splints

The splint is primarily used to;

  • immobilise a joint or limb to allow for pain control,
  •  injury stabilisation,
  •  and ultimately tissue healing.

In the acute setting, splinting is useful as a temporising treatment for;

  • sprains,
  • strains,
  • joint dislocations,
  • and fractures.

In the chronic setting, splinting is useful mainly for inflammatory or degenerative conditions.

The splints are like a new plant and stake.

When you first grow a plant it is unable to support itself as it grows and so instead it grows back down towards the ground due to multiple reasons either sunlight or water.

This is why many Gardeners and Farmers will use a stake and tie the plant to it so it has support to grow against, in an upward direction. The ankle acts in the same way as the plant the splints act as a support, to help the ligament surrounding your bones, become stronger on your road to recovery.

The splints do not only help fractures and sprains but it also helps to repair and relieve conditions such as arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome.

In the same way, it helps the sprains and fractures it instead of healing the condition. Which can sometimes be too late or impossible. However, it can help to relieve pain.

It Has Velcro Straps

Velcro straps help to ensure a personalised and accurate fit. Which is especially handy for controlling compression levels depending on the presence of swelling. As too tight and the brace can start to cut the circulation of blood blow within the ankle and to loose can lead to the brace being ineffective and in supportive towards the injury or condition.

Velcro makes it easy to put on and take off an ankle brace. Yet, is still strong enough to be effective in terms of compression on the ankle.

Lace-up style ankle braces provide the least amount of ankle support.

Lace-up braces restrict all ankle range of motion so the moment the athlete steps on the court and start to play, their normal ankle motion is working against the lace-up brace causing it to lose support rapidly.

Just because the lace-up, or tie-up, ankle brace feels tight around the ankle at first doesn’t mean it’s providing the highest level of protection.

So, in fact, the trusty velcro strap is the best fastening option.

It is very important to keep the swelling down which is much easier with velcro straps. This will lessen pain and help your injury heal

Here is what you can do for extra help to reduce swelling for the best results:

    • Elevate. It is very important to elevate your injured ankle for the first 24 to 72 hours. Prop your injured. Elevation allows clear fluid and blood to drain "downhill" to your heart.
    • Exercise. Move your uninjured, but swollen toes gently and often. Moving them often will prevent stiffness.
    • Ice. Apply ice to the injury. Place the ice in a dry plastic bag or ice pack and loosely wrap it around the ankle at the level of the injury. Ice that is packed in a rigid container and touches the ankle at only one point will not be as effective.

It Can Be Worn Whilst Completing Simple Tasks

The purpose of an ankle brace after an injury like a sprain is to keep the tendons and ankle in the proper position while the injury heals.

You need to wear a brace for two to six weeks after a sprain. Sprains can be very minor and would heal quickly in about 2 weeks, or they can be severe and take six weeks or more to fully heal.

Can I wear my ankle brace to bed?

Yes, you certainly can.

The question is: Should you?

When you’re off your feet, you don’t really need the support but if you’re a light sleeper, it’s possible that you’ll give it a knock in the nighttime.

Our suggestion is that in severe cases, wearing a light ankle wrap to bed can be a good idea, but for many cases, it will be unnecessary

As well as wearing it to bed you can wear the brace at work over your sock and in your show to get optimum results. It can even be worn when stood cooking, cleaning, or perhaps whilst taking the dog for a walk.

It Can Be Worn During Exercise Or Sports

The ankle joints are susceptible to injury during sports and physical movements that require you to cut and change directions explosively.

When you perform cutting movements and your foot tilts either too far inward or outward, you can sprain the ligaments in the ankle.

Ankle braces, however, have been found to significantly decrease the risk of both initial and recurring ankle injuries.

Football players reduced their risk of ankle injury by more than half when wearing an ankle brace.

These injury risk reductions occurred even in those athletes who had already suffered from ankle injuries, which would make them more susceptible to reoccurring ankle injuries.

Depending on the activity ankle braces are more important to wear during sports where you're cutting, such as basketball and football.

If you're performing an exercise that involves running straight ahead, like going for a jog, your ankles aren't at significant risk of injury.

Public Health studies showed that high school basketball players who wore stabilising ankle braces had 68 per cent fewer injuries than athletes who did not.

Doesn't that sound promising?

For a sport like football, the braces should definitely be worn for both practice and game day. There are more opportunities for injury during practice.

Athletes are just as likely to roll an ankle during practise as they're during their actual game so wearing the brace whilst playing in both practise and game can help to prevent injury or further injury of their ankles.

It Fits All Sizes

Our ankle support features a simple but effective design which fits all size of the foot.

The foot brace can be tailored to fit any ankle shape with adjustable velcro straps which attach to any point on the external surface.

The support ankle has adjustable tension straps to provide a custom fit for controlled compression.

Ankle braces can reduce swelling by serving as a compression device around your injury.

Reducing swelling can really help in your injury recovery. This can help prevent further damage and pain.

Depending on the severity of your sprain, you may have to have the brace on a tighter setting.
These braces are designed to completely isolate and immobilise your ankle’s ligaments and joints.

While the brace is not a 100% deterrent to injury, it certainly reduces the risk of an ankle sprain from happening. Most sprains typically occur during training.

While recovering from your ankle injury, you can help regain your range of motion by doing specific ankle exercises while wearing your ankle brace.

Increasing your ankle’s range of motion can hamper the development of scar tissue. This is 100% possible with the adjustable straps allowing for easy or restricted movement within the ankle.

The less scar tissue that builds up, the less pain you’ll feel. Ankle exercises should be recommended by your physician.

You don’t want to overuse your ankle if your sprain was severe.

This support brace:

  • can be adjusted
  • can be worn on the left or the right ankle depending on the brace selected at checkout
  • can be made tighter or looser

The Takeaway

So to conclude, ankle supports cannot heal injuries or treat conditions permanently. However, they can help to make your condition bearable so that you can continue your everyday routine when it comes to cooking, walking and cleaning.

Opposed to healing and treating this ankle brace trains your muscles and ligaments into certain positions with your ankle to make it stronger internally making your injury or condition improved.
